Introduction
A legacy of excellence in medical education
Founded in 1948 (roots traced back to 1544), Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University (IKBFU) has built more than 90 years of medical education and research. It began with a single faculty, General Medicine, and today has five faculties and 81 departments covering medicine, paediatrics, dentistry, preventive medicine and pharmacy. As of November 2023 it taught 15,112 students, 5,207 of them international, drawn from 60 countries.
The university began as a small medical institute in Kaliningrad and has since trained more than 60,000 doctors and pharmacists. It is ranked 11th among the top 15 medical universities in the BRICS pilot rankings, and is described as the top regional medical university in Russia.

Kaliningrad, Kaliningrad Oblast
Kaliningrad is the capital of the Kaliningrad Oblast, a city of more than 1.2 million people covering some 708 km² on the border of Europe and Asia. It is one of Russia's major educational and cultural centres, and is regarded as safe and student-friendly.
The main campus sits in central Kaliningrad, with Kaliningrad International Airport roughly 20 km away. The city is served by buses, trams, trolleybuses and taxis, so getting around is straightforward.

Academic and research excellence
The university runs five main faculties — General Medicine, Pediatrics, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Preventive Medicine — alongside a Medical College, and runs 77 residency and 46 postgraduate programmes. More than 2,000 residents and PhD students train here, and around 7,000 physicians a year take continuing medical education courses.
Established research schools cover surgery, oncology, urology, cardiology and morphology.

Neither the NMC nor the WHO “approves” foreign medical institutions; however, Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. The offered “General Medicine” programme meets the structural criteria outlined in the NMC’s guidelines in the Indian Gazette as FMGL Regulations 2021. It is 6 years long (5 years of coursework and a 12-month mandatory internship) and taught in English for foreign students and recognised by Russian ministries, allowing eligible graduates to sit for the FMGE/NExT in India or other licensing examinations in different countries.
